Biography
Arlene Shechet is a sculptor known for her eclectic approach, combining unexpected materials and moving fluidly between intimate and monumental scales. Splicing wood with steel, stacking ceramic on concrete, and pairing rough hand-worked textures with smooth planes, Shechet’s sculptures unfold organically, alive with intention and discovery.
Among the major exhibitions and institutional projects devoted to Arlene Shechet are the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, in 2015; The Frick Collection, New York, and The Phillips Collection, Washington, in 2016; Madison Square Park, New York, in 2018; and Storm King Art Center, New York, in 2024. In 2023, she was elected a lifetime member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Shechet’s work is in over fifty public collections worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), The Centre Pompidou (Paris), National Gallery of Art (Washington D.C.), Los Angeles County Museum of Art (Los Angeles), Hirshhorn Museum (Washington D.C.), Nasher Sculpture Center (Dallas), Walker Art Center (Minneapolis), and Whitney Museum of American Art (New York). She currently lives and works in New York City and the Hudson Valley.
